It has a beautiful design and shape, and comes with a gamepad-like controller for multimedia and games.

It uses the Google TV (Android-based) operating system, that let's you download and play Android apps and video games. Since this player is old and uses an older version of Android, you can't use Google Play services to download newer content. However, you can install APK (Android Package) files without having to use the Google Play services.

If Android-based Blu-ray players became the norm, it would have been cool to use a Blu-ray disc to use it as a distribution medium for APKs. For example, a BD that contains 2D BD-J game for all BD players would come with a 3D version of the game in a APK file for Android devices.

Not counting Xbox Series or anything after the PlayStation 4, the Sony NSZ-GT1 is the only "stand alone" BD player that is powered by an x86 CPU, the Intel Atom N450 processor running at 1.6 GHz.
